If you find yourself in Barrio Logan and in need of a quick meal, head straight over to Barrio Dogg, where they serve up hot dogs that straddle the line between American standard and Chicano comfort food. Like many up-and- coming local restaurants, Barrio Dogg prides itself on using high-quality ingredients while putting their own unique spin on classic dishes. Inspired by the street food movement, which has gained incredible popularity around San Diego, Barrio Dogg intends to elevate the standard hot dog to something you can truly look forward to. This eatery celebrated its grand opening on October 21, but it has already made a name for itself among locals.
Any Kind of Dog You Could Dream Up
In order to make a great hot dog, you have to start with a quality sausage. Barrio Dogg uses non-GMO, certified organic hot dogs made from 100 percent Black Angus beef. They then top it with a host of flavorful, unique and carefully sourced ingredients, ranging from fresh cilantro to wasabi sesame seeds. Their standard dogs range in price from $5 to $8, and you can upgrade any hot dog to be bacon wrapped for another $1. La Virgen, their $5 dog, comes in a steamed roll with condiments. From there, the options get more exotic. The El Xolito, for example, has mayo, mustard, ketchup, red onion, Roma tomatoes, chopped fresh jalapenos, cilantro, crunchy garlic, grilled onions, cheddar cheese, sour cream, salsa verde and Sriracha aioli sauce, all for $6.
Hot Dogs Exotica
Their most exotic dog, El Vaquero (The Cowboy), is topped with chile con carne, crispy melted cheese, chopped jalapeno, red onion, salsa verde, sour cream, cotija cheese, crunchy garlic and cilantro. It costs $8 and is only available on the weekends. Tasty Sides and Sweets, Too For beverages, you can order a bottle Cocoa Cola, Fanta or water. Barrio Dogg also has several great side dishes, including fideo (Spanish noodles), nopalitos (diced and cooked prickly pear cactus), macaroni or even calabacitas, a sautéed pork and veggie dish, all for just $3.50 a serving.
With authentic flavors and quality ingredients, Barrio Dogg will likely soon become your go-to hot dog joint in San Diego. See you there – you’d better be hungry!
