Hillcrest has some of the most popular and trendy locations in San Diego. If you’re hoping to try some of them out without going totally broke, then Happy Hour specials are the word! You can sample the drinks and dishes at select businesses for a discounted price.

Monday at Martinis

Monday: Martinis Above Fourth Table + Stage
Location: 3940 4th Avenue, Second Floor
Hours: Monday-Thursday: 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday: 4 p.m. to 1 a.m., Sunday: 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Happy Hour: Seven days a week from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., suspended on holidays or during ticketed shows
Price: $$

If you need something with a little kick to take the edge of the first day of your work week, head right over to Martini’s Above Fourth. This establishment is a full bar, restaurant and venue in one. The best reason to stop in on a Monday is that you can get Happy Hour pricing all day!

Their Happy Hour specials include $5 bottled beers, $6 house wines, Stella draft beers and house well cocktails. For just $8, you can get Svedka vodka martinis, Barton gin martinis or a frozen Svedka cocktail. Discounted appetizers include blistered shishito peppers and fried calamari.

Tuesday at The Brew Project

Tuesday: The Brew Project
Location: 3683 5th Avenue
Hours: Monday-Thursday: 3 p.m. to midnight, Friday: 3 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., Sunday: 9 a.m. to midnight.
Happy Hour: Monday-Friday: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If you’d rather have a beer than a cocktail at your early week Happy Hour, The Brew Project is the place for you! They only feature beers made by local, independent brewers in San Diego, and they have a very impressive assortment. Their beer menu is constantly changing, but you are assured to find something that fits your preferences among the more than two dozen available options.

During Happy Hour, you can order wings for half off, with $5 beers and wines, and $7 premium spirits. They do other specials throughout the week, including Taco Tuesdays and $5 Keep the Pint Night on Wednesdays.

Wednesday at Gossip Grill

Wednesday: The Gossip Grill
Location: 1220 University Avenue
Hours: Seven days a week from noon until 2 a.m.
Happy Hour: Seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., all day Wednesday
Price: $$

The Gossip Grill caters to the local LGBT community, but welcomes anyone. This place is 21 and up, except for brunch on Sunday before 2 p.m. They regularly have DJs and dancing, and the atmosphere could not be more fun.

When you buy a drink off the Happy Hour menu, you get a token for your next drink. Options include wells for $7.75, bottle beers for $4.50 to $5.50, with draft beer specials priced between $5.50 and $7.00. A range of appetizers is on special, for prices ranging from $5.00 for hand cut fries to $7.50 for bacon wrapped studded jalapenos.

Thursday at Ortega’s

Thursday: Ortega’s Bistro
Location: 141 University Avenue
Hours: Monday-Thursday: 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday: 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., Sunday: 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Happy Hour: Seven days a week from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

If you enjoy a Tex-Mex twist on your Happy Hour, wander into Ortega’s Bistro. The menu here includes staples like guacamole, shrimp ceviche and a range of flavorful tacos, like carnitas and poblano queso tacos.

Their Happy Hour specials are some of the best in Hillcrest. For just $4, you can order a range of beers or a Sauza Signature Blue tequila shot. $5 will buy you a margarita, well drinks or a range of wines, while $6 is all it costs for sangria, certain craft beers and fine wines. There are even some premium margaritas on the menu for just $7.

Friday at Baja Betty’s

Hours: Monday-Friday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Happy Hour: Seven days a week from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Baja Betty’s has a reputation for being a fun, relaxed place to grab a drink with friends and enjoy an amazing plate of food. They have specials throughout the week, including Taco Tuesdays and Half-Off Menu Mondays, when certain dishes are half priced.

Their Happy Hour specials are as expansive as their menu. They call Happy Hour Papi Hour, and you can get a house margarita in a range of flavors, house shots, well cocktails, house wines and sangrias, bottled or draft beers or salads for just $4.75. The discounted foods expand on the weekend to include guacamole, Mexican pizza, fish tacos and even quesadillas.

Saturday at Uptown Tavern

Hours: Monday-Friday: 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday-Sunday: 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Happy Hour: Monday-Thursday: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday: 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

If you want to visit an establishment with a casual yet welcoming atmosphere, Uptown Tavern is worth your time. This establishment is adults only so only bring your friends and co-workers who are 21 or older. The lounge is open later than the kitchen, so you can hang out and have drinks after you eat.

Their Happy Hour specials include $4 wells and house wines, $5 for all beer and $5 mules. There are typically a few dishes discounted as well, depending on the day. In addition to a full cocktail menu, you can order dinner or brunch on Sunday.

Sunday at Kous Kous

If you want to enjoy a flavorful meal and a discounted drink to wind down your weekend, stop into Kous Kous Moroccan Bistro. Their menu includes options like ratatouille sliders, ahi tuna steak, lamb chops, shak shouka, chicken tagine, Fassi lamb, Kefta meatballs and spiced lamb sausage. They also create feasts for guests, which feature a wide range of dishes for prices ranging from $25.95 a guest to $49.95 per guest.

Their Happy Hour specials include half off of drinks and great discounts on food. You can order Harira soup, a mixed greens salad or Moroccan potato salad for just $2.50, or couscous salad for only $3!
