Who is Behind Hugo’s Cocina
San Diego is full of restaurants where you can get tacos or carne asada fries on every corner, but what about a vegan and vegetarian focused Mexican restaurant? You won’t find as many of those around, especially not with high quality ingredients. There are of course the chains that are starting to grow, but here in San Diego we love to support locals. Hugo’s Cocina opened nearly a year ago, but the location has been a Mexican restaurant for 20 years prior.
When Matt and Patrick, co-owners, saw the prior restaurant was closing they decided to take over with all the employees intact. The store now is named after Hugo, the General Manager, for his love and dedication he puts into the store daily. Hugo has been working in that same location for over 20 years now, Matt said we couldn’t have done it without him and it was an easy decision to name the restaurant after him.
What’s on the Menu
Hugo’s Cocina is original in many different ways. They serve traditional mexican food with endless vegetarian and vegan options. If you find a menu option that doesn’t offer a vegan or vegetarian option, don’t fret. Matt says him and his staff are 100% willing to transform a plate to make it the way you like it. He said, “if there is a way, we’ll make it vegan or vegetarian for you.” What we learned, when talking to the owner, Matt, was how unique Hugo’s Cocina really is. From the drink menu to the food menu everything is done in their own original style. Although, they’ve only been open for almost a year, they have already created the charm that customers now look forward to when going to Hugo’s.
Conveniently located in Ocean Beach, having most menu options translating easily into vegan and vegetarian plates is a big sell. They use Gardein Carne Asada, a soy based product that tastes as close to the real thing as vegan food gets! We got a burrito to make sure. We’re meat eaters and the Vegetarian California Burrito could have fooled us. For other dishes they use meat substitutes such as tofu, soy, fake fish, and fake chicken and of course the classic veggie and bean overloads.
Mexican Craft Beer
Let’s talk beer scene. Hugo’s Cocina has a very special beer and wine selection. They serve only Mexican imported craft beer. Matt explained, that the beer scene in Mexico is growing immensely and that their drinks are fantastic quality. To fully integrate with the mexican theme, they plan to serve primarily Mexican wine and beer. They do however serve one American Beer; they serve the Amber Beer from Eel River Brewing co.; an FDA certified organic beer.
